An infection of your fingernails or toenails can be a very embarrassing condition.  People tend to think it will go away on its own as the new nail grows out. Unfortunately, that is not the case.  It will actually continue to get worse and can become quite severe. The infection is caused by a nail fungus called dermatophytic onychomycosis.  Some refer to it as ringworm of the nail. It starts as a small white or yellow spot on the nail. As the infection spreads and gets deeper, the nail will thicken and crumble on the edges and become very unsightly.  For many it can become quite painful.

These types of infections can be very hard to treat.  Most remedies take from three to six months to heal the nail. One of the reasons is that it takes time for the healthy nail to grow long enough to replace the damaged one. The toenails are much more often affected than the fingernails and will sometimes have to be treated numerous times, as these types of infections tend to reoccur. Men more than women, athletes, people with immune disorders and those that tend to spend a lot of time in the water, are at a higher risk of nail infections.

Physicians have been successful in treating nail fungus with drugs such as Griseofulvin, Lamisil, Sporanox and Fluconazole. The draw backs are the many side effects that have been reported. Some even require regular checks to make sure that no liver damage is detected.  Because of this, people often tend to use natural remedies and those they can buy over the counter or online, such as top rated Zetaclear, Funginix and Nail Rx.

In addition to the over the counter remedies, many chose to also treat their nail fungus with a few remedies that can probably be found in every-one’s home.  Tea tree oil is often used because it has antiseptic properties. Apple cider vinegar, oregano mixed with olive oil, Listerine mouth wash (yes you heard correctly), Chamomile tea, ginger tea, raw garlic and hydrogen peroxide are all proven home remedies that are often successful.  Their common factors are their antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-fungal actions.  Garlic powder can also be used as a shoe powder to keep the fungus from spreading.
